My husband\u2019s family loved unannounced visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, we were just nearby and thought we\u2019d stop by. We\u2019re family, after all,\u201d my mother-in-law would say every single time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The word \u201cnearby\u201d usually meant they had traveled quite a distance. And their quick \u201cstop by\u201d always turned into a full invasion: suitcases, children, jars of homemade pickles, and even their cat, who believed our couch was its personal scratching post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lady of the house was forty-six years old. She worked in publishing and cherished quiet mornings, peaceful breakfasts, and the rare calm weekends she managed to get. Her husband, a gentle fifty-four-year-old man, could say \u201cno\u201d perfectly well at work. But to his mother \u2014 never.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Every visit followed the exact same pattern. The doorbell rang. Loud greetings echoed in the hallway. And within seconds, suitcases were already in the entryway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell, why are you standing there? Let your family in,\u201d my mother-in-law would say as she stepped inside, immediately inspecting the apartment. \u201cThese curtains should be replaced. And your soup is always too watery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The nephews would turn the television up to maximum volume. The cat would sharpen its claws on the sofa. And my mother-in-law would wake up before everyone else and start clattering around in the kitchen because, according to her, \u201ca real family needs a hot breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A visit that was supposed to last \u201cjust a few days\u201d always stretched into at least two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hostess endured it for a long time \u2014 for the sake of her husband and to keep the peace. But one Friday evening she reached her limit. She had just finished a long workday and dreamed only of rest and silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the doorbell rang, she already knew who was standing outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the landing stood her mother-in-law with a large suitcase, and beside her was her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSurprise!\u201d the older woman exclaimed cheerfully. \u201cWe\u2019re having renovations at home. There\u2019s dust everywhere and the kids can\u2019t breathe there. We\u2019ll stay with you for a week\u2026 maybe two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman didn\u2019t move. She stood calmly in the doorway wearing a silk robe and looked at her guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGood evening,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cI also have a surprise for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her mother-in-law stepped inside automatically, as if the apartment belonged to her. But after a couple of steps she suddenly stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the hallway there were several neatly placed signs on the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGuest Stay: Maximum 2 Days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Below it were several additional rules:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKitchen \u2014 self-service.\u201d \u201cEach guest cleans up after themselves.\u201d \u201cQuiet hours after 9:00 PM.\u201d \u201cAny damage to furniture must be compensated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her mother-in-law blinked in confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat is this supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not a joke,\u201d the woman replied calmly. \u201cThese are simply the new house rules.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that wasn\u2019t the biggest surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the living room table lay several documents \u2014 real printed agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her mother-in-law picked one up and started reading aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTemporary accommodation in the apartment\u2026 maximum duration: 48 hours\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She lifted her head sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t be serious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m completely serious,\u201d the woman answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She calmly sat down in an armchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSince you like arriving without notice, I decided to be prepared. Everything is written there \u2014 length of stay, house rules\u2026 and a small security deposit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA deposit?!\u201d her mother-in-law burst out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes,\u201d the woman said calmly. \u201cWe\u2019ve already replaced the couch twice because of your cat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A heavy silence filled the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even the children stopped talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her mother-in-law\u2019s face turned red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is insulting! We are family!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s exactly why I tolerated it for three years,\u201d the woman replied calmly. \u201cThree years of \u2018short visits\u2019 that turned into weeks. Three years of comments about how I should live in my own home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She looked her mother-in-law directly in the eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut from now on, the rules are the same for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her husband, who had been standing quietly to the side, finally spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMom\u2026 maybe this time you could stay at a hotel?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His mother turned toward him in disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019re taking her side?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He shrugged awkwardly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur apartment really is small.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The silence that followed felt almost unbearable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Slowly, the older woman placed the contract back on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLet\u2019s go,\u201d she said to her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGo where?\u201d the daughter asked quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo a hotel. Apparently\u2026 there are rules here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They picked up their suitcases and left the apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
