I had imagined a completely different wife for my only son. An educated, confident woman with a good career and the right social background. Marina was the exact opposite of the person I had pictured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
She had grown up in a small village, attended vocational school, and started working almost immediately afterward. She spoke simply, sometimes made grammatical mistakes, and knew very little about the things I considered important. She didn\u2019t know which piece of cutlery should be used first at a formal dinner, couldn\u2019t really discuss art, and always seemed uncomfortable around my friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, I\u2019m ashamed to remember how serious those shortcomings seemed to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, I tried not to interfere. I kept telling myself that my son was an adult and had every right to decide whom he wanted to build a life with. Yet every time I saw Marina, I found another reason to convince myself that he had made a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One evening, Marina came to our house for a family dinner. She brought a homemade pie and smiled as she told us that the recipe had been passed down from her grandmother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During dinner, she made a few mistakes while speaking, and I deliberately corrected her in front of everyone. The room suddenly fell silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After their wedding, our relationship became even colder. I didn\u2019t openly start arguments, but I knew how to make my disapproval clear in other ways: through little remarks, my tone of voice, and constant comparisons with other women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I especially liked to mention my friend\u2019s daughter. She had a university degree, a good job, and her own apartment. Our children had known each other years earlier, and I had secretly hoped that something romantic might develop between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My son understood exactly what I was doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One winter day, I fell badly on the steps outside a store. Nothing was broken, but I injured my leg badly enough that I could barely walk for a while. During the first few days, my son came over after work, bought groceries, and helped around the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But soon he had to leave for several days on a business trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I planned to hire someone to visit me in the mornings and evenings, but my son said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I immediately refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The very thought of depending on someone I had spent so long considering unsuitable for our family made me uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She cooked, took out the trash, went to the pharmacy, and left water, my phone, and everything else I might need beside my bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next day, she came back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And she kept coming for almost a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One evening, I woke up and heard voices in the kitchen. My son had returned from his business trip and was talking to his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy did you come here every day?\u201d he asked her. \u201cAfter everything that happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marina\u2019s answer was nothing like what I expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause she\u2019s your mother. If something happened to her, it would hurt you. And I don\u2019t want you to be hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I felt so ashamed that I turned toward the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suddenly, all my previous complaints seemed unbelievably petty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What did it really matter which village she came from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What did a diploma truly tell you about a person if having one guaranteed neither kindness nor decency?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why had I considered the way she spoke more important than the way she behaved?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I remembered that family dinner, the pie she had brought, and the embarrassed expression on her face after my remarks. I remembered dozens of little insults I had thrown at her while pretending I was simply concerned about my son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I thought I was protecting his future. In reality, I was trying to force his future to match my own expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few days later, Marina came to see me again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By then, I could move around the apartment on my own. She put the groceries on the kitchen table and was about to leave when I asked her to stay for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I wanted to give her a beautiful speech, but I couldn\u2019t find the right words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cForgive me,\u201d I finally said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She looked at me in surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her question made me feel even worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou know exactly what for. I humiliated you. I thought I was better than you simply because I had a different education and a different life. And the worst part is that I convinced myself I was doing it for my son.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marina remained silent for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn\u2019t tell me that nothing serious had happened. And she was right not to. Something serious had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some words really do leave scars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she sat down across from me and said calmly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI never wanted to take your son away from you. I just wanted to be with him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think that was the first time I truly looked at her not as \u201cthe wrong wife,\u201d but as a person in her own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I began noticing everything I had refused to see before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marina knew how to listen when my son came home exhausted from work. She remembered which medicines I needed. She was willing to change her own plans whenever someone close to her needed help. She never tried to impress anyone and rarely talked about the good things she did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course, I didn\u2019t become the perfect mother-in-law overnight. Old habits disappear slowly. Sometimes I still wanted to correct the way she spoke or give her advice she hadn\u2019t asked for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But now I had learned to stop and ask myself: Does this really matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several months passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On my birthday, Marina brought a homemade pie just like the one she had made before the wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This time, I was the first to ask her to cut me a slice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s delicious,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We both fell silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a long time, I believed my son had chosen a woman who wasn\u2019t good enough for him. In reality, the problem wasn\u2019t his choice. It was the way I judged people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education matters. The ability to speak well can matter too. A person\u2019s background, profession, and life experience can tell us a great deal about them. But none of those things alone determines whether someone knows how to love, support the people closest to them, and remain a decent human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes a family isn\u2019t built when someone who perfectly matches our expectations walks into our lives. It is built when we learn to accept the people our loved ones have chosen and judge them primarily by their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It took me far too long to understand that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if I could return to just one evening from my past, I would choose that family dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I wouldn\u2019t correct her mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
