During our thirty-five years of marriage, Viktor and I have been through a lot. There were years when money barely lasted until the next paycheck, sleepless nights with small children, moves, our parents\u2019 illnesses, family arguments, and reconciliations. Then our children grew up, built lives of their own, and suddenly we found ourselves alone together again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For our anniversary, Viktor suggested spending a few days by the sea. No fancy dinners or expensive gifts\u2014just a short vacation we hadn\u2019t allowed ourselves in a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
One day, we were walking along the beach. It was warm but not unbearably hot. I was wearing a swimsuit with a light shirt over it. Viktor asked a passing woman if she could take a picture of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a perfectly ordinary photograph: we were standing by the water, his arm around my shoulders, both of us smiling. Behind us were the sea and a bright sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I loved the photo precisely because of its simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That evening, I posted it on my page with a few words about our anniversary. I wasn\u2019t trying to look younger, slimmer, or more glamorous. I simply wanted to preserve a happy moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first comments were kind. Friends congratulated us, and someone wrote that it was wonderful to see a couple still together after so many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then our daughter left a comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She wrote that at my age, perhaps I should choose something a little more modest. Then she added another remark, saying that not every swimsuit photo needed to be shared publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe she thought she was joking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What hurt most was knowing that other people could see her words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several minutes, I simply stared at the screen. My first instinct was to delete the photograph. Suddenly, I imagined everyone examining my stomach, arms, and legs and deciding whether a woman my age had any right to look like that in a swimsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had already opened the photo to delete the post when I stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only thing that had changed was my reaction to someone else\u2019s words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was when I decided not to delete it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I didn\u2019t want to start a public argument with my daughter either. I could have replied angrily, received dozens of sympathetic comments, and turned a family disagreement into a spectacle for everyone we knew. But what would that have taught anyone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So I said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few days later, we returned home. Our daughter was coming over with her children for a family dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before she arrived, I took out several old photo albums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They contained pictures of our daughter at different stages of her life: a schoolgirl with messy hair, a teenager wearing clothes Viktor and I once thought were awful, a young woman experimenting with an unusual hairstyle, and a new mother after the birth of her first child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of the photographs were beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others were not particularly flattering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I loved every one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When our daughter arrived, I asked her to stay for a little while after dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We sat down in the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I placed several photographs in front of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDo you remember this one?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOf course. It\u2019s terrible. Why do you even keep it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause it\u2019s you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I showed her another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMom, put that away. I look awful there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I asked her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cImagine if I had posted this picture online and written underneath it that you shouldn\u2019t have dressed like that, or that you should have gotten your body into better shape first. How would you have felt?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The smile disappeared from her face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several seconds, she said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I didn\u2019t raise my voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen you were growing up, I didn\u2019t always like the way you dressed either. Sometimes I worried about your hairstyle, your makeup, or your weight. But I tried not to make you feel ashamed of your body. Because I knew you might forget my advice, but you would remember how my words made you feel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was only joking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI understand. But if a joke makes someone you love feel humiliated, maybe it\u2019s worth asking whether it was really funny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After that, we talked for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My daughter admitted that she had no idea how deeply her comment had hurt me. To her, a photograph on social media was something insignificant. She looked at it, typed the first thing that came to mind, and continued with her day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But for the person on the other side of the screen, those few seconds can carry an entirely different weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She apologized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you say something to me right away?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I told her that first I needed to understand what I actually wanted to achieve: whether I wanted to hurt her the way she had hurt me, or whether I wanted her to understand why her words had been painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That evening, my daughter deleted her comment herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the photograph stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And I still like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because I think I look perfect in it. I can see the changes that come with age, and I know I don\u2019t look the way I did at twenty-five. But that no longer frightens me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My body has carried me through decades of life. It has changed through pregnancies, illnesses, stress, sleepless nights, and the simple passage of time. Expecting it to look the same in later life as it did in my youth would be unreasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Age changes more than our appearance. It can also change the way we see ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we are young, we often look at our bodies through other people\u2019s eyes. We ask ourselves whether we are slim enough, attractive enough, and whether we fit someone else\u2019s idea of what is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But eventually, another question begins to matter: Do I really want to spend the years I have left constantly seeking other people\u2019s permission to be myself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That doesn\u2019t mean anyone has to display confidence or stop caring about their appearance. Everyone has the right to dress as boldly or as modestly as they feel comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But age itself should never become a reason for shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This experience reminded me of something else as well: sometimes we need to be most careful with the people closest to us. We often assume that family members will forgive any thoughtless joke. As a result, we sometimes say things to them that we would never dream of saying to a stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But closeness does not make words hurt less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it does exactly the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Words from someone we love can hurt more precisely because their opinion matters to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some time has passed since then. Recently, my daughter saw that photograph again and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou know, you and Dad really do look happy there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps that was the only thing I had wanted to see in that picture from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not my age. Not my clothing size. Not the imperfections of my body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
