The morning began like any other. After several hot days, the ground around the house had become dry, so I decided to water the flowers early, before the sun climbed too high. I picked up the garden hose, turned on the water, and was about to walk toward the flower bed at the far end of the yard when a terrible smell suddenly stopped me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, I thought a small animal might have died somewhere nearby. The odor was heavy and so intense that I almost turned around and went straight back inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
But the source was much closer than I expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just a few meters from the flower bed, beside an old wooden fence, something bright red was sticking out of the grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first glance, it looked like a piece of raw meat lying on the ground. But after a few seconds, I noticed movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The red projections were gently swaying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instinctively, I took a step backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My first thought was that it might be some unusual worm or an animal I had never seen before. The strange thing looked wet, almost slimy. And it was clearly the source of the disgusting smell I had noticed near the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had absolutely no desire to get any closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But curiosity eventually won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I approached carefully, making sure not to touch anything. Only then did I realize that I had been wrong from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was no animal in front of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It Had Grown Out of the Ground<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
If you look closely at the base of such a strange formation, you may notice a structure typical of a fungus. Organisms like this really do exist, and they can easily frighten someone seeing them for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the best-known examples is Clathrus archeri, an unusual fungus with red or orange-red arms that resemble tentacles. It is commonly known as \u201cdevil\u2019s fingers\u201d or the \u201coctopus stinkhorn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When young, the fruiting body looks almost nothing like the bizarre structure it will eventually become. It initially develops inside a pale, rounded casing that resembles an egg and can be found on the surface of the soil or partially buried beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the outer casing opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several red arms begin emerging from inside and gradually spread outward. This is why a mature specimen can easily be mistaken for a sea creature, a giant insect, or something from a science-fiction story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But its appearance is only half of the surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why Does It Smell So Terrible?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Many flowers use pleasant fragrances to attract pollinating insects. Some fungi have developed the exact opposite strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A dark, sticky substance containing spores forms on the surface of the fruiting body. It produces an extremely strong odor reminiscent of decaying organic matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To humans, the smell can be revolting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To flies, however, it is attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The insects land on the fungus and come into contact with the spore-containing material. They then carry some of those spores away on their legs and bodies, helping spread them to other locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this way, the fungus effectively uses flies as a transportation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What seems disgusting to us is actually an efficient reproductive strategy in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is also why the first impression of such a fungus can be so misleading. Its red color, bizarre shape, and smell of decay encourage the brain to search for a familiar explanation: an injured animal, exposed organs, or some unknown creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reality is much more interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How Could Something Like This Appear in a Garden?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Finding an unusual fungus does not necessarily mean that something is wrong with the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fungal network can remain hidden for a long time in soil or decomposing plant material. Areas containing wood chips, old roots, compost, mulch, and other organic matter can provide particularly suitable conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When temperature and moisture levels become favorable, fruiting bodies may appear surprisingly quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This means that someone can care for the same garden for years without seeing anything unusual, only to walk outside one morning and discover an organism they have never noticed there before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its strange appearance may not last very long either. The fungus emerges, opens, disperses its spores, and eventually begins to decompose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Should You Touch It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
When you discover an unfamiliar fungus, it is generally better not to handle it with bare hands. You should also never determine whether an unknown mushroom or fungus is edible based only on a photograph or visual resemblance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are an enormous number of fungal species, and organisms that look similar can have very different characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If a fungus appears in the garden and its strong smell becomes a nuisance, the visible fruiting body can usually be carefully removed while wearing gloves. However, removing the part above ground does not mean the entire fungus is gone. Most of its network remains hidden in the soil or other substrate and may extend across a much larger area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If it is not causing any problems, another option is simply to leave it where it is and observe how it develops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For me, the discovery became an unexpected reminder of just how strange ordinary nature can sometimes be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only a few minutes earlier, I had been convinced that some unknown creature had appeared beside my flowers. I stood at a distance, wondering whether it was even safe to approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In reality, I was simply witnessing a normal stage in the life cycle of an unusual fungus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I eventually finished watering the flowers, but throughout the day I returned to the spot several times to look at it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The red \u201ctentacles\u201d no longer seemed quite so frightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most surprising part was something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I did not have to travel to a remote jungle or search for rare animals to see something that looked as though it had escaped from a science-fiction movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
