or as long as I can remember, my mother always wore long sleeves. In autumn and winter, there was nothing unusual about it. But she kept doing the same thing even in July, when the heat became almost unbearable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At family gatherings, other women arrived in light dresses and blouses, while my mother always chose long-sleeved shirts. At the beach, she wore a thin tunic and almost never took it off. Even at home, I rarely saw her wearing a T-shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
As a child, I didn’t think much of it. Adults have all kinds of strange habits, and children simply accept them as part of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the older I became, the more one question bothered me: What exactly was my mother trying to hide?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day, I asked her directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMom, aren’t you hot?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She smiled and said she was used to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another time, I offered her one of my new T-shirts. She looked at it, thanked me, and immediately changed the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It happened again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I had never seen him raise a hand against my mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One evening, Mom and I were home alone. Dad had gone out to take care of some errands, and heavy rain began falling outside. Mom was sitting in the kitchen, sorting through old documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I stood in the doorway for a long time before finally finding the courage to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She didn’t answer. Instead, she gathered the papers from the table, carried them into another room, came back, and closed the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she sat beside me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I told her everything: the long sleeves, the way she reacted when someone touched her arm, and the suspicions I had begun to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several seconds, Mom stared at me in complete confusion. Then she slowly unbuttoned the cuff of her shirt and rolled up her sleeve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A large, uneven scar stretched along the inside of her forearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had never seen it before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDid Dad do that to you?\u201d I asked, almost in a whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom shook her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo. Your father saved me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those words changed everything I thought I knew about our family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It had happened many years before I was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the time, Mom and Dad were living in a small rented apartment. Late one evening, an electrical short circuit started a fire in the kitchen. The flames quickly spread to the curtains and nearby furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom tried to put out the fire herself and suffered a serious burn on her arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to her, it was Dad who pulled her out of the smoke-filled kitchen and called for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The scar never disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But why had she hidden it for all those years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom remained silent for a long time before answering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It wasn’t only about the injury itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the accident, she had struggled to accept the change in her appearance. She constantly felt as though people were staring at her arm. Some really did ask questions that were far too personal. Others looked at her with pity, which was exactly what she didn’t want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gradually, long sleeves became a kind of shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, she covered her arm to protect herself from other people’s stares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later, she did it simply out of habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the years passed, the habit became such a natural part of her life that she never even thought about explaining the story to her own children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy didn’t you ever tell me?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause I didn’t want you to see me as someone you needed to feel sorry for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That evening, I understood for the first time how easily we can create an entire story from just a few details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had seen the long sleeves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had noticed how Mom avoided questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I knew my father could be difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And I had connected those facts into a story of my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that story was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Dad came home, Mom told him about our conversation herself. At first, he looked surprised. Then he remained silent for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It turned out that he, too, considered the accident a chapter of their lives that had ended long ago, and he almost never spoke about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the next few days, I began asking my parents about their younger years. I discovered that I knew far less about them than I had imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind the familiar words \u201cMom\u201d and \u201cDad\u201d were two people with their own fears, mistakes, losses, and memories from a time long before their children were born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We often believe we know the people closest to us completely. In reality, we know only the part of their lives they have chosen to share with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silence can have many different reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes people hide their past because of fear. Sometimes because of shame. Sometimes because a memory still hurts. And sometimes they simply don’t want to return to an event they have spent years trying to leave behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After our conversation, Mom didn’t stop wearing long-sleeved shirts. I never asked her to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But one summer day, something happened that I had never seen before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom walked into the yard wearing a short-sleeved shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The scar was clearly visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked at it for only a moment and then continued our conversation as though nothing unusual had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think that was exactly what Mom had always wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not pity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not people trying to guess her past from a single scar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just the freedom to decide for herself when and with whom she wanted to share her story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since that evening, I have tried to remember this whenever I think I have completely figured someone out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind a single habit can be an entire story we know nothing about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
