Sofie had long grown used to the fact that in a small town, other people’s lives rarely remained private. Everyone seemed to know who had argued with whom, who had failed to repay a debt, who had secretly sold a piece of land, and who had come home far too late. So when she began dating Viktor Rain, people started talking almost immediately.

Many people knew him, yet almost no one could say anything definite about him. He was tall, quiet, and nearly always wore a work jacket. He rarely lingered in cafés or attended town celebrations. Every morning, his old pickup truck passed through the main street toward the hills, and every evening it returned.

Behind his back, people called him the “Pig King.”

Sofie heard that nickname before they even had their first dinner together.

“Are you really serious about him?” her acquaintance Laura asked. “Do you even know what he does?”

Sofie didn’t.

When she asked Viktor, he gave her a simple answer.

“I work with animals. I have a property outside town.”

The explanation seemed too brief, but Sofie didn’t push him. What she liked about Viktor was something else: around him, she never felt the need to pretend. He didn’t try to impress people, didn’t boast about money, and never filled conversations with stories about his achievements.

One day Sofie’s car broke down on the road. Viktor arrived twenty minutes later, repaired a damaged hose, and refused to accept payment. Another time, he helped an elderly neighbor carry firewood even though she hadn’t asked him.

Gradually, Sofie began to notice something strange. People laughed at Viktor, yet many of those same people turned to him whenever they needed help.

A year later, he proposed.

When the news spread through town, some of Sofie’s acquaintances tried to convince her she was making a mistake.

They told her stories about filthy farms, terrible smells, hundreds of pigs, and a man who had supposedly built a fortune by selling animals. Others claimed Viktor practically lived among pig barns. That, they said, was why he never allowed visitors into the far side of his property.

Sofie had never been there either.

Behind Viktor’s house, a private road disappeared through the woods toward several old farm buildings. Large metal gates blocked the entrance.

One day Sofie asked him:

“What’s back there?”

“I’ll show you after the wedding,” he replied.

She didn’t like the secrecy.

More than once, she wondered if there really was something unpleasant hidden beyond those gates. Still, Viktor had never given her any other reason to doubt him.

They married in early autumn.

The wedding was small. A few relatives, friends, and neighbors gathered in the garden beside Sofie’s house. Viktor seemed unusually tense throughout the evening.

The next day, he suddenly said:

“Come with me. I want to show you something.”

They turned off the usual road and stopped in front of the familiar metal gates.

Viktor took out a key.

“Just promise me you’ll look at everything first. Ask questions afterward.”

Beyond the gates stretched a long lane lined with apple trees. In the distance stood several large pale buildings.

Sofie expected an ordinary farm.

But as they came closer, she noticed something strange. Dogs were running near one building, rabbits were kept in spacious enclosures nearby, and two goats grazed farther away.

Then a huge pink sow appeared from an open pen.

Several more pigs followed behind her.

There were many animals, but the place looked nothing like Sofie had imagined from the stories she had heard in town. The enclosures were spacious and clean, with water containers and feeding stations beside them.

A woman in work clothes came toward them.

“Good morning, Viktor. The new one is eating on her own now.”

“Excellent,” he said.

Sofie still didn’t understand.

Viktor led her farther inside.

One building housed elderly animals. Some struggled to walk, while others bore obvious signs of old injuries. In another building, several veterinarians were examining a young pig.

Only then did Viktor finally explain everything.

Years earlier, his father had indeed run a conventional livestock business. The family owned a large pig farm and sold animals.

After his father’s death, Viktor inherited the property.

But he didn’t want to continue the old business.

Over time, he sold much of the equipment, reduced the number of livestock, and began taking in animals whose owners could no longer care for them. At first, there were only a few pigs.

Then other animals began arriving.

People brought elderly animals, abandoned pets, injured animals, and those for whom regular shelters simply had no space.

Little by little, the former farm became a small private animal rescue center.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?” Sofie asked.

Viktor shrugged.

“Because then everyone would start coming here. Some out of curiosity, others just to leave animals at the gate. We already take in more than we can really afford.”

“Then why do they call you the Pig King?”

For the first time in the entire conversation, Viktor laughed.

The nickname, he explained, had appeared years earlier when he first inherited the farm. People assumed he had received a huge and profitable business.

In reality, much of the money from selling the old equipment had gone into repairing buildings, paying veterinarians, buying food, and caring for the animals.

But Viktor had never bothered correcting the rumors.

“It was easier that way,” he said. “Let them think I’m just some strange farmer.”

Sofie looked at him and didn’t know what to say.

For months, she had listened to people mock a man they believed had devoted his life to pigs for money. Now she understood that those same animals were the reason much of his income was constantly spent on rescue and care.

Before leaving, they entered a small room beside the main building.

Inside a separate enclosure lay a tiny piglet.

“They found him beside the road three days ago,” Viktor explained. “Someone probably just abandoned him.”

Sofie crouched beside the enclosure.

The piglet cautiously came closer and touched its snout to her hand.

“What’s his name?”

“He doesn’t have one yet.”

Sofie thought for a moment.

“Then let’s call him King.”

Viktor smiled.

A few weeks later, Sofie began helping at the center on weekends. She handled paperwork, searched for feed suppliers, and arranged cooperation with veterinary clinics.

The rumors in town did not disappear.

People still joked about the “Pig King” in cafés from time to time.

But whenever Sofie heard the nickname now, she no longer tried to correct anyone.

She knew something they didn’t.

Sometimes a person’s reputation is shaped not by what they actually do, but by what others find easier to imagine about them.
