She took out a second plate out of habit, held it for a moment, then put it back. The soup was still hot, someone outside had been struggling to park for several minutes, and the sound of a zipper closing came from the bedroom.

Andrei was getting ready for a business trip.

After seventeen years of marriage, Marina could recognize his packing routine by its sounds. When the trip was real, he wandered around the apartment looking for his charger, grumbled about his shirts, and asked where his document folder had gone. Today, everything was too quiet. His suitcase had been beside the bed since morning. His shirts were neatly folded. He had bought a new charger.

Marina stirred the soup, although it no longer needed stirring.

She had seen the tickets the previous evening. Andrei had asked her to print a receipt for the insurance company and left his email open on their home computer. While Marina was looking for the attachment, a booking confirmation arrived.

Two passengers. Four nights. A small hotel by the sea.

She recognized the second name immediately: Vera Lavrova.

Vera had come to their home the previous New Year’s Eve with Andrei’s colleagues. She had brought a pie, helped clear the dishes, and admired Marina’s houseplants. Marina had thought the young woman seemed uncomfortable and had made an effort to give her extra attention.

After reading the email, she stared at the screen for several seconds. Then she opened the receipt, printed it, and placed it beside the computer. That was the action she remembered most clearly: she had done what her husband asked, even though she already knew where he was going.

That night, Andrei slept beside her, facing the wall. Marina listened to his breathing and went over the past few months. His late arrivals home. The phone he had started taking even into the bathroom. His irritation whenever she suggested spending a weekend together.

She had found an explanation for each of those things before. Now there was only one explanation, but it brought no relief.

In the morning, she wanted to wake him and demand an answer. Instead, she went into the kitchen, closed the door, and called her sister.

“Could I stay with you for a few days?”

Her sister did not start asking questions over the phone.

“Of course. When?”

“I don’t know yet.”

After that, Marina managed to eat breakfast.

The day passed in strangely ordinary tasks. She answered work emails, collected her coat from the dry cleaner, and bought bread. She packed her documents, medication, and a few clothes into a bag. She could not yet decide what would happen to their marriage, their apartment, or the life they had built. But she did not want to spend the evening alone among his belongings.

Andrei came out of the bedroom wearing a new pale blue shirt.

“Have you eaten?”

“Not yet.”

“Make sure you do. I’ll get something at the airport.”

He sounded caring. Marina watched him check his passport, pat his pockets, and adjust his watch. The man she had lived with for so many years stood two steps away, still playing the part of a busy husband.

“So it’s four days after all?” she asked.

“If we finish quickly, I’ll come back sooner. It’s a difficult situation. The client won’t budge. My boss asked me to sort it out in person.”

He said it without hesitation.

Marina nodded. Suddenly, she wondered how much time he had spent preparing that story. Had he invented the client beforehand, or added him just now because he noticed her silence?

At the door, Andrei put down his suitcase, stepped closer, and kissed her temple.

“I’ll call when I land.”

He had already reached for the handle when Marina asked:

“Does Vera know you’re going on a business trip?”

His hand stopped.

For several seconds, the only sound was the elevator behind the wall. Andrei turned slowly.

“What Vera?”

Marina looked at him wearily.

He was the first to look away.

“You read my email?”

“I was printing your receipt. The tickets came through.”

Andrei let go of the handle. The suitcase remained between them.

“Marina, let’s talk calmly. This is more complicated than you think.”

“Then explain it.”

He opened his mouth but said nothing. He took out his phone, glanced at the screen, and put it away again.

“We’ve been having problems for a long time,” he said at last.

That was true. They often spoke only about groceries, bills, and household chores. They could spend an entire evening in the same room barely noticing each other. Marina had felt the distance growing too.

But she remembered something else.

“In May, I suggested we go away together, even just for a weekend. You said you didn’t have the money or the time.”

Andrei rubbed his face with both hands.

“I’m confused.”

“But you bought the tickets.”

He sat down on the shoe cabinet in the hallway. Marina had never seen him sitting there: a tall man hunched awkwardly in his carefully ironed shirt.

“What do you want me to do?”

Just yesterday, she would have answered immediately: cancel the trip, apologize, stay home. Now, each of those actions seemed too small compared with what had happened.

“I want you to stop asking me how you should behave,” she said. “You arranged this trip without my help.”

Marina went into the bedroom and returned with her bag.

Andrei stood up.

“You’re leaving?”

“To stay with my sister. For a few days.”

“And then what?”

“I don’t know yet.”

He looked at the bag as though he had only just realized that this conversation would not end with an explanation and their usual evening tea.

His phone vibrated again. This time, he did not even take it out.

“I can cancel everything.”

“You can.”

“Wouldn’t that change anything?”

Marina took hold of her bag’s strap.

“It would cancel the trip. We’ll have to talk about everything else separately.”

He stepped away from the door.

Outside, the air smelled of wet asphalt. Marina reached the bus stop before she noticed she had forgotten her gloves. She did not go back for them.

On the bus, a message arrived: “I stayed home.”

She read it twice. Then she texted her sister that she would be there in twenty minutes and put her phone away.

She began crying only when she was sitting at her sister’s kitchen table. She could barely explain the tickets or the conversation at the door. Her sister pushed a box of tissues toward her and sat down beside her.

In the morning, Marina would have to go to work. In the evening, she would have to decide whether she was ready to talk to Andrei. She did not have the answers yet.
