When my neighbor stepped into her yard carrying a laundry basket, I was standing behind the curtain, waiting. She took a few steps, looked up, and stopped. Then she set the basket on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had prepared myself for an angry reaction. I had even rehearsed what I would say if she demanded that I remove everything immediately. But she stood quietly for a long time before asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDid you do this for me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At that moment, my carefully prepared speech became completely unnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
We moved into a small house at the end of August. I loved the old apple tree, the bright kitchen, and the separate bedroom for my sons. After two years in a cramped apartment, it felt as though we could finally live comfortably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only one detail didn\u2019t fit my picture of a cozy home: a clothesline stretched along our neighbor\u2019s fence, directly opposite the boys\u2019 bedroom window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, I noticed towels hanging there. Then sheets. A few days later, I opened the curtains one morning and discovered an entire row of women\u2019s underwear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I closed the curtains again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because I thought drying laundry was somehow indecent. The wet clothes simply hung so close that they blocked part of our view of the yard. We hadn\u2019t even finished settling in, and I already felt that I couldn\u2019t open a window without someone else\u2019s belongings being right in front of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Naturally, the boys noticed quickly. One started counting the clothespins, while the other invented a funny nickname for the line. I asked them not to make fun of our neighbor and tried to take my own advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the laundry appeared almost every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our neighbor\u2019s name was Nina Pavlovna. She lived alone, wore gardening gloves even in cool weather, and always nodded when we passed each other without stopping to talk. I thought she was being deliberately unfriendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our first conversation happened at the gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNina, would it be possible to move your clothesline a little farther away? It\u2019s right in front of the boys\u2019 window.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She looked at the window, then at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat spot gets sunshine first thing in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes, but surely there\u2019s somewhere else in your yard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere is,\u201d she replied, and went inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I decided she had simply brushed me off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next day, nothing changed. A week later, I brought it up again. This time, she told me the clothesline had been in the same place for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For some reason, that remark bothered me more than the laundry itself. It felt as though buying our house meant we had to immediately accept every habit of the person living on the other side of the fence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That evening, I complained to my husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe knows perfectly well that it bothers us. She just doesn\u2019t want to change anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He walked over to the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMaybe. But where exactly are you suggesting she put it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy the shed, for instance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHave you seen what it\u2019s like over there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I hadn\u2019t. Currant bushes hid the part of her yard behind the shed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next morning, after Nina left for the store, I looked over the low fence. Beneath an old apple tree stood a crooked drying rack. Wire had been wrapped around one of its legs. The ground around it was dark from the rain, and the branches overhead blocked almost all the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was another spot beside her house\u2014dry, open, and sunny. But the only way to reach it was along a narrow path crowded with flowerpots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I remembered how she carried her laundry basket. She would set it on a bench, rest for a moment, and pick it up again. Before, all I had noticed was that she was hanging clothes outside our window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, my irritation didn\u2019t disappear. I wanted to see the yard in the morning, not someone else\u2019s washing. I simply decided to try a different approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had some wooden slats left in the garage after the move. We had planned to use them to make a support for climbing plants. I asked my husband to help me build a tall privacy screen with a lattice at the top. We secured it to two heavy planter boxes so the wind wouldn\u2019t knock it over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWon\u2019t that block the window even more?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll put it to one side. That\u2019s the angle where we can see the clothesline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We tried the screen in place. Light still came through freely, the middle of the yard remained visible, and the hanging laundry no longer caught the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We could have stopped there. But that evening, I went to a household supply store and bought a lightweight folding drying rack. It was tall enough that Nina wouldn\u2019t have to bend down for every item and narrow enough to fit between the pots beside her house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next morning, we installed the screen on our side of the fence. Beside it, near the gate, I left the drying rack with a note: \u201cIf this works for you, please use it. There\u2019s no need to move anything today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Nina noticed everything, I came outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe screen is ours,\u201d I explained quickly. \u201cYou could put the rack beside your house. But if that\u2019s inconvenient, the clothesline can stay for now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She ran her hand along one of the bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA leg broke on my old one. I kept tying it together, but it still falls over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She spoke quietly, as though she were making excuses. Suddenly, I felt embarrassed by how confidently I had discussed her stubbornness with my husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou could try this one,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWas it expensive?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNot very.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nina looked at me more closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ll pay you back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLet\u2019s see whether it fits first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We walked over to the wall together, moved two flowerpots, and unfolded the rack. She hung a towel on it, gave the frame a gentle push, and nodded with satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she admitted that she had thought I was ashamed of her laundry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI thought you\u2019d bought yourselves a lovely house, and now there was an old woman with her rags spoiling it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat bothered me was how close it was to the window. But I should have explained that more clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn\u2019t answer. She just straightened the edge of the towel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few days later, the clothesline was empty. Nina asked my husband to take it down and brought us a bowl of plums. She did pay me back for the rack\u2014in small installments, as she could afford them. She wouldn\u2019t let me refuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The screen stayed. The boys planted sweet peas beside it. At first, they took so long to sprout that we thought they never would. Then, suddenly, they started climbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day, my younger son asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMom, did you beat the neighbor?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked out the window. Nina was taking dry towels off the rack beside her house and folding them into a basket resting on an old stool. For the first time since we\u2019d moved in, she didn\u2019t seem to be rushing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe worked it out,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He shrugged and ran outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I opened the window. Nina looked up and asked whether I could water her seedlings on Saturday. She needed to visit her sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
