The birds have been in my desk for almost eighteen years. I carved them when you brought the boys home. I wanted to make a mobile to hang above their cribs, but I couldn\u2019t finish the little one. Its wing kept breaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Misha died. I put the work away and never went back to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I picked up the little bird. One wing was slightly thicker than the other, and an uneven knife mark remained along its back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe did. When he heard Kirill crying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kirill raised his eyebrows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWas I already keeping everyone awake back then?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We laughed. I did too\u2014for the first time in the middle of a story about Misha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I brought out the album. We looked at a photograph of all three boys lying across our bed. Andrei asked whose hand was in the picture. Sergei\u2019s. Kirill noticed the striped socks and wanted to know why one baby was wearing a mismatched pair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I remembered that too: the matching sock had gone missing in the wash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the guests arrived, we put the album away and placed the swallows on the bookshelf. Andrei straightened the little one several times. Its uneven base made it wobble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
