He had savings, a country house, and a small construction company. He could afford the necessary treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But instead of simply helping, he offered her a deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He would pay for my medical care if Marina agreed to marry him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, I refused to believe what I was hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was sitting in front of a mirror, slowly removing her earrings. When she saw me, she tried to stand, but I stopped her with a gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only then did I notice how much weight she had lost. There was no trace of a newlywed’s happiness on her face, no hope for a joyful future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDo you love him?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That single word hurt more than anything I had heard during the previous two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I wanted to embrace her and promise that I would fix everything immediately. But for the first time, I realized that I had no right to make decisions for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMarina, you saved my life. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She began to cry, quietly, almost without making a sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
