The whole village was shocked that day when a familiar but long-forgotten sound echoed along the dusty road coming from the highway.

People began peeking out from their gates, someone stopped near the well, and old Grandma Nina even set down her bucket because she instantly recognized the rattling engine.

It was old Stepan.

He had already turned seventy. After his wife passed away, he hardly spoke to anyone. He wore the same worn-out jacket every day and postponed even the simplest tasks for years. The roof of his house leaked every spring, the fence leaned crookedly to one side, and the garden had long been overrun with weeds.

But that day, what surprised everyone most was something else entirely.

There was a woman sitting behind him on the motorcycle.

She looked about thirty years old. She wore a blue dress with small daisies and held onto the old man’s waist as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The motorcycle moved slowly, coughing and sputtering from time to time. Occasionally they even had to push it forward with their feet because the engine seemed unwilling to keep running.

When they stopped in front of Stepan’s yard, a small crowd had already gathered along the neighboring fences.

“Good heavens… he’s completely lost his mind,” Grandma Nina whispered.

“Is that his granddaughter?” old Nikolai asked.

But Stepan, as if he heard nothing at all, calmly removed his helmet, helped the woman step off the motorcycle, and said in a steady voice:

“Let me introduce you. This is Lena. My wife.”

For several seconds the entire street fell silent. Even the chickens stopped clucking. Then the whispers began.

Some people laughed, others shook their heads, and a few openly said that the old man must have lost his senses after his wife died.

“She’s forty years younger than him!”
“She must be after his money.”
“Let’s see how long she stays.”

Lena heard every word. Yet she simply smiled politely and greeted everyone as if nothing unusual was happening.

She walked into the yard as though she had lived there for years. The old creaking gate closed behind them, and the villagers remained by the fences for a long time, talking and speculating.

But the days passed, and Lena didn’t leave.

The very next morning the village woke up to an unfamiliar sound. From Stepan’s yard came the sharp rhythm of a hammer. Once again neighbors began peeking through their windows.

Stepan and Lena were repairing the roof.

The old man handed up wooden boards while Lena confidently hammered in the nails.

“Just look at that,” said neighbor Maria in amazement. “She works harder than most men!”

A few days later another surprising change appeared. The garden that had been abandoned for years suddenly came back to life. Lena worked from morning until evening, turning the soil, planting vegetables, and watering young seedlings.

In the evenings she would sit beside Stepan on the porch, quietly talking with him.

And for the first time in many years, people saw the old man laughing.

Still, the gossip in the village did not stop.

“There must be something behind this…”
“She’s hiding something…”

A week passed.

Then something happened that truly left everyone stunned.

Early one morning a black car pulled up in front of Stepan’s house. Cars like that rarely appeared in the village. Two well-dressed men stepped out and walked straight toward the gate.

Neighbors immediately gathered along the road, pretending not to stare.

“Well, now we’ll learn the truth,” Grandma Nina whispered.

The men spoke with Stepan in the yard for a long time. Eventually one of them handed him several documents. The old man looked confused as he held the papers, while Lena stood beside him quietly holding his hand.

After a while, the car drove away.

But the biggest surprise was still ahead.

The next day construction workers arrived with equipment. They began replacing the roof, fixing the fence, and cleaning up the yard.

The entire village was bewildered.

“Where did he get the money?”
“This must be because of her…”

A few days later, however, Stepan decided to tell everyone the truth himself.

One evening he walked up to the fence where several neighbors were standing. He was silent for a moment before speaking calmly.

“I know many of you think Lena came here for money.”

People exchanged uneasy glances.

“But the truth is very different.”

He looked at Lena, and there was such deep gratitude in his eyes that many suddenly lowered their gaze.

“Lena is a doctor. We met in the hospital last winter. I had a severe heart attack… and if she hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t be standing here today.”

The street fell completely silent.

“After I left the hospital, she began visiting me. She brought medicine, helped around the house… And one day she told me that no person should have to spend the end of their life completely alone.”

Lena stood quietly beside him.

Then Stepan added something that surprised everyone even more.
