The boy stopped right in front of the judge. His hands were trembling slightly, but when he finally spoke, his voice came out surprisingly steady and clear.

— Your Honor… — Hugo lowered his eyes for a moment. — May I say something?

A deep silence fell over the courtroom. The judge gave a small nod.

— Go ahead, son.

Hugo took a deep breath and looked straight at Claire. There was no fear or hesitation in his eyes — only a strange, almost взрослый determination.

— She is not our mother, he said.

The words landed like a sharp удар. Claire visibly flinched.

— We haven’t seen her in ten years, Hugo continued. — She wasn’t at our birthdays. She wasn’t there when I was in the hospital. She doesn’t know our favorite colors. She doesn’t know that Grandpa makes us tea every morning because I’m allergic. She… doesn’t know anything about us.

Lucas stepped closer and quietly added:

— But Grandpa knows everything.

Claire jumped to her feet.

— This is manipulation! You turned them against me! — she shouted.

— Sit down, — the judge said firmly.

Hugo continued, as if afraid he might lose his courage:

— She doesn’t want us. She wants money. I heard her on the phone… — he paused, his eyes filling with tears. — She said that if she got the company, she would get rid of us.

A murmur spread across the courtroom.

Claire turned pale.

— That’s not true! — she snapped.

The judge looked at her with a cold, measuring gaze.

— Do you have any proof? he asked calmly.

Hugo nodded. Lucas pulled a phone out of his pocket.

— We recorded it, he said quietly.

My heart nearly stopped. I had no idea they had done that. The recording was played in the courtroom.

Claire’s voice came through clearly:

— …I’ll take half of the company and get rid of those kids. I don’t need extra problems.

After that, there was absolute silence.

Claire sank back into her chair, her face drained of color.

The judge removed his glasses and spoke slowly:

— I believe that makes everything clear.

He looked at the boys, then at me.

— These children have already made their choice. And that choice is based on years of care and genuine love.

Claire tried to speak, but her lawyer gently touched her arm — a signal to stop.

— The court rules that full custody remains with the grandfather. In addition, proceedings will be initiated to review the mother’s parental rights.

Lucas squeezed my hand tightly.

Hugo simply let out a quiet breath, as if a heavy weight had finally lifted from his shoulders.

I couldn’t hold back my tears.

For ten years, I lived in fear that someone would come and take them away from me. That I would lose the only thing I had left of my son.

But that day, I understood one simple truth.

Family is not just those who give you life.

Family is those who stay.

When we walked out of the courthouse, the sunlight hit our faces.

— Grandpa, are we going home? Lucas asked.

I smiled, wiping my eyes.

— Yes… we’re going home.

And for the first time in many years, that word meant more than just a place.

It meant safety.
