Soft whispers faded quickly, as if even sound itself did not dare disturb the moment.
The coffin was slowly moved toward the furnace. The staff carried out their duties with calm precision, following a routine they knew by heart. Everything seemed orderly, controlled — exactly as expected.
Until something changed.
Just as the mechanism started, a sound emerged.
At first, it was faint — like the subtle creak of wood under pressure. A few people exchanged uncertain glances, but no one reacted. It could have been anything… or so they thought.
Then it came again.
This time, unmistakable.
A scream.
Sharp, sudden, and completely out of place. It cut through the silence like a blade. The entire room froze. Someone gasped, another stepped back in shock. For a brief second, it felt as though time had stopped altogether.
One of the workers immediately halted the process. Another rushed toward the coffin. By now, there was no doubt — the sound had come from inside.
The lid was opened.
What they saw left everyone stunned.
The face of the deceased no longer looked the same as it had moments earlier. The expression appeared tense, almost distorted, as if something had frozen there in a final instant. But that wasn’t the most disturbing part.
On the inside of the coffin lid, there were marks.
Scratches.
They weren’t deep, but they were clearly visible — and far too deliberate to ignore.

Panic began to spread. Voices rose, questions filled the room. Some people refused to believe what they were seeing, while others were already overwhelmed with fear. The calm atmosphere shattered completely.
The staff tried to explain. They suggested the sound could have been caused by temperature changes, making the wood crack in a way that resembled a cry. They also mentioned that involuntary muscle contractions can sometimes occur after death.
But not everyone was convinced.
All eyes kept returning to the scratches. Some insisted they hadn’t been there before. Others weren’t sure. Still, one thing was undeniable — the marks looked disturbingly intentional.
The family demanded a thorough re-examination. The cremation was stopped immediately, and the body was sent for further inspection to rule out any possible mistake.
The results came soon after.
Medically, the death was confirmed. There were no signs of life.
And yet… there was still no clear explanation for the scream or the scratches.
That uncertainty only deepened the mystery.
Some began to speak about rare medical conditions in which a person can appear dead without fully being so. Others recalled old stories of similar incidents. Skeptics, however, insisted it was nothing more than a combination of physical factors — acoustics, materials, and the human mind under stress.
But for those who were there, explanations no longer mattered.
They heard that scream.
They saw those marks.
They felt that sudden, chilling fear that logic couldn’t erase.
Later, the crematorium resumed its work as if nothing had happened. The incident was never officially reported. Still, among those who witnessed it, the story lived on — passed quietly from one person to another, growing with each retelling.
Some believe there is a rational explanation.
Others are certain that something far beyond understanding occurred that day.
And even now, one question remains unanswered:
what truly made that sound from inside the coffin… and where did those scratches really come from?
