My husband abandoned me on the very day I gave birth to our fifth daughter.

The day our fifth daughter was born, I lost my husband. But the worst part wasn’t that he left us. Before walking away, he said something that forever changed the way I saw the man I had spent eleven years of my life with.

«Five girls, Marina! Five! Do you even understand what this means? I can’t live like this anymore!»

He packed his belongings, closed his suitcase, and walked out of the maternity ward without even looking at our newborn daughter.

Little did I know that seven years later, we would unexpectedly run into each other. He would smile when he recognized me, but the moment he noticed the man standing beside me, his face would turn deathly pale.

That was when I would discover a secret my ex-husband had been hiding for years.

The Man Who Dreamed of Having a Son

When I first met Victor, he seemed like the perfect man. He was attentive, hardworking, and confident. He knew how to make me feel special and constantly talked about his dream of having a big family.

However, there was one detail I initially overlooked. Whenever we discussed our future children, Victor always mentioned having a son.

He was delighted when our first daughter was born. He loved our second daughter too, although he had already started joking that our next child would definitely be a boy.

After the birth of our third daughter, the jokes stopped.

His mother constantly reminded us that the family needed a male heir. Victor began spending more time at work, getting irritated over the smallest things, and blaming me for something I had absolutely no control over.

When our fourth daughter was born, he didn’t even come to pick us up from the hospital. He claimed he had an urgent business meeting.

I tried convincing myself that my husband was simply exhausted. We really were going through a difficult period. Between our mortgage, household expenses, sleepless nights, and constant financial worries, life wasn’t easy.

But when I became pregnant again, Victor gave me an ultimatum.

«If it’s another girl, I’m leaving.»

I couldn’t believe that a father would actually abandon his family simply because his child wasn’t a boy.

I was wrong.

The First Months Without My Husband

Our youngest daughter was just three days old when Victor disappeared from our lives for good.

At first, I called him every day. Then once a week. After a month, I stopped calling altogether.

I was left alone in our apartment with unpaid bills, children’s clothes scattered everywhere, five little girls, and absolutely no idea how we would survive.

Our oldest daughter, Alice, was nine years old at the time. She understood exactly what had happened, although she tried desperately to hide her feelings.

One evening, while I was sitting at the kitchen table crying, she came over, wrapped her little arms around my shoulders, and asked:

«Mommy, did Daddy leave because we were bad?»

I will never forget that question.

I pulled her onto my lap and explained that neither she nor her sisters had done anything wrong. Sometimes adults make decisions, and they alone must take responsibility for them.

That night, I made myself a promise: my daughters would never grow up believing they were unwanted.

A few months later, I filed for divorce and requested child support. However, Victor officially earned almost nothing, making it extremely difficult to secure regular payments.

I found a job as an accountant at a small company. In the evenings, I took on additional bookkeeping assignments, and on weekends, I helped a friend manage the finances of her small store.

Life was incredibly difficult. Sometimes I was so exhausted that I fell asleep right at the kitchen table.

But gradually, things began to improve.

An Unexpected Meeting

Four years after my divorce, I met Andrew.

It happened under completely ordinary circumstances. I had gone to a hardware store to buy supplies for renovating our kitchen and was struggling to figure out which parts I needed to install a new faucet.

A man standing nearby noticed my confusion and offered to help.

We started talking. It turned out that he was an engineer who had recently moved into our neighborhood and had an adult son.

A week later, we unexpectedly ran into each other again, this time at the supermarket.

Andrew invited me for coffee.

I initially refused. I had five children, a demanding job, and endless household responsibilities. How could I possibly find time for dating?

But he turned out to be an incredibly patient man.

When I told him about my daughters, he wasn’t frightened or discouraged. Instead, he asked about their hobbies and interests.

At first, I deliberately avoided introducing him to my children. I didn’t want my girls to become attached to another person who might eventually disappear from their lives.

However, after six months, Andrew suggested that we all go on an outing together.

We went to the park.

He didn’t try to pretend he was the perfect father. He simply talked to the girls, bought them ice cream, listened to their endless stories, and helped our youngest learn how to ride a bicycle.

Gradually, he became part of our family.

Two years later, we got married.

It seemed that the past was finally behind us.

But one day, everything changed.

The Encounter I Never Expected

It happened on a Saturday.

Andrew and I had gone to the shopping mall to buy birthday presents for our middle daughter.

I was admiring the display in a jewelry store when I suddenly heard a familiar voice behind me.

«Marina? I can’t believe it! Is that really you?»

I turned around and saw Victor.

Seven years had barely changed him. He had the same confident smile, an expensive jacket, and that familiar way of speaking as though the entire world owed him its attention.

«What a surprise! You look amazing! How have you been?»

He examined me carefully from head to toe.

«And how are the girls? They must be so grown up by now!»

A cold shiver ran down my spine.

Throughout all those years, he had never once wished his daughters a happy birthday. He had never asked about their health. He hadn’t even attempted to get to know our youngest daughter, whom he had practically never seen.

And now he was standing in front of me as though we were old friends.

«We’re doing well,» I replied briefly.

At that moment, Andrew approached us carrying two cups of coffee.

«Marina, I got you a cappuccino. Did they still have those earrings you liked?»

Then he turned toward Victor.

And suddenly, something completely unexpected happened.

My ex-husband’s smile instantly disappeared.

He stared at Andrew as though he had just seen the one person in the world he had never expected to encounter.

«You?» Victor gasped.

His hands began trembling visibly.

«What is HE doing here?»

I looked at my husband in complete confusion.

Andrew’s expression had also changed, but he quickly regained his composure.

«Hello, Victor,» he said calmly. «It’s been a long time.»

A Secret from the Past

We left the shopping mall and found an empty table at a nearby café.

Victor initially refused to join us, but Andrew told him that it was finally time to settle something they had both kept hidden for far too long.

It turned out that the two men knew each other very well.

Many years earlier, Andrew had been the head of the engineering department at a large construction company. Victor had worked for the same company as its financial director.

One day, Andrew discovered serious discrepancies in the financial records of a major construction project. Money intended for purchasing building materials had been transferred into the bank accounts of intermediary companies.

Andrew reported the suspicious transactions to senior management.

An internal investigation was launched.

However, before the investigation could be completed, Victor resigned.

«I lost my job because of you!» Victor snapped angrily at Andrew.

«You lost your job because of your own decisions,» my husband replied.

I listened to their conversation without understanding what was happening.

Then Andrew revealed something I could never have imagined.

After Victor resigned, the company’s management discovered additional documents. Among them were records of money transfers into a bank account registered in my name.

When I heard this, my heart began pounding.

«In my name? But I’ve never had an account like that!»

Victor looked away.

Andrew explained that at the time, he hadn’t known anything about his former colleague’s wife or children. All he knew was that the documents mentioned a woman named Marina.

The company had handed the evidence over to its lawyers, but the subsequent investigation failed to establish who had actually been using the account. The matter remained unresolved.

When Andrew and I met years later, he had absolutely no idea that I had any connection to Victor.

He knew me by my maiden name, and I had rarely mentioned my ex-husband’s surname.

Only now did all the pieces suddenly fall into place.

The Confession I Had Waited Seven Years to Hear

«Why did you use my personal documents?» I asked Victor.

He remained silent for a long time.

Finally, he admitted that years earlier, he had used copies of my passport and forged my signature on banking documents.

According to him, his original plan had been to return the transferred money quickly and close the account before anyone noticed the suspicious transactions.

However, his scheme had fallen apart, and the investigation had begun.

At that moment, I remembered how Victor had suddenly announced, shortly before the birth of our fourth daughter, that we urgently needed to reduce our household expenses.

I remembered his late-night telephone conversations, his constant nervousness, and his endless complaints about problems at work.

Suddenly, everything started making sense.

But one important question remained unanswered.

«Did you really abandon us because our fifth child was another girl?»

He remained silent for so long that I almost stopped expecting an answer.

«No,» Victor finally admitted. «I owed a lot of money back then. It was easier for me to start over.»

I stared at him, unable to believe what I had just heard.

For all those years, my daughters had believed that their father abandoned them because he desperately wanted a son.

But the truth was that he had simply used the birth of our fifth daughter as an excuse to escape his family responsibilities and disappear.

I stood up from the table.

«You know, Victor, I spent years wondering what I could have done differently. Now I finally understand that the problem was never me or our daughters.»

He attempted to say something, but I no longer wanted to listen.

The Most Important Decision of My Life

Over the following weeks, Andrew and I contacted a lawyer.

I needed to establish exactly which documents had been issued in my name and whether Victor’s financial activities had left behind any obligations I knew nothing about.

We managed to obtain archived records and confirm that the signatures on the old documents were not mine. Our lawyer helped us prepare the necessary legal documents and formal complaints.

I had no intention of hiding what had happened. But I also refused to turn the rest of my life into an endless battle with the past.

One day, my oldest daughter asked why I had been so thoughtful lately.

Alice was sixteen years old by then.

I explained that I had unexpectedly encountered her father and discovered some previously unknown circumstances surrounding our divorce.

She listened carefully before saying something that completely surprised me.

«Mom, I used to wish so badly that Dad would come back. But now I understand that we have a real family even without him.»

Her words meant more to me than any explanation ever could.

For years, I had believed that I needed to prove to Victor just how terrible his decision had been.

I had imagined the day when he would finally see our wonderful daughters and regret all the years he had lost.

But after our unexpected encounter, I finally understood that I had absolutely nothing left to prove to him.

That evening, our entire family gathered in the kitchen.

The girls were arguing about which movie we should watch. Andrew was preparing dinner, and our youngest daughter was proudly showing me a drawing she had made of our whole family.

I looked around at that noisy, happy group and smiled.

Seven years earlier, a man had walked out of the maternity hospital, leaving me alone with five daughters and the overwhelming feeling that my entire world had collapsed.

What I hadn’t realized back then was that the very same day marked the beginning of an entirely different story.

A story in which I would learn to rely on myself, meet a man capable of loving my children, and finally understand one simple truth.

A real family isn’t defined by promises or the desire to have a male heir. It is built by people who are willing to care for one another every single day.

And when our youngest daughter wrapped her little arms tightly around Andrew that evening and called him Daddy, I finally realized that the past no longer had any power over our happiness.
